The peony is one of the world’s most breathtaking flowers — famously celebrated in Paris each spring. When you find these exquisite blooms at your local florist, it’s worth knowing how to care for them so they stay beautiful for as long as possible.

“After women, flowers are the most divine creations,” Christian Dior.

Occasionally at my Little French Heart store I display a special bouquet of peonies, which has lasted up to 10 days. They bring such joy, and so much beauty that I want to share them with you.
A favourite of Josephine Bonaparte, the peony is still adored today and celebrated every year in Paris from May through late June. When you see one in bloom, it’s easy to understand why — they are simply exquisite.

In Australia, peony season usually begins in late October and runs until early December, although a few special imported bunches sometimes arrive during the European season too. Given the price of imported peonies, it’s worth choosing bouquets that will reward you with the full show — from a promising bud, to ruffled, fluttering petals, to the final graceful curtsy as petals gently fall to the floor.

What to Look for When Buying Peonies

When buying peonies, choose a trusted florist — ideally one you know and love. Don’t be shy to ask if the bunches they stock have been blooming well. Buds don’t always open, and a good florist will know which suppliers deliver the best results. I once had a florist change growers for exactly this reason!
When you choose your bouquet, look for buds that feel soft and slightly squishy — this means they’re about to unfurl. Avoid tight, hard buds if you can, as they sometimes stay closed, drooping their little heads while their sisters bloom.

How to Care for Your Peony Bouquet

Once you bring your peonies home:
Trim the Stems: cut about 5cm from the bottom of each stem at an angle. Remove any leaves that will sit below the waterline.
Use a Clean Vase: wash your vase thoroughly with warm, soapy water and rinse well to remove any hidden bacteria.
Feed the Flowers: add flower food according to the instructions, or mix in half a teaspoon of sugar and a dash of vinegar — this helps keep the water clean and nourishes your blooms.

Arrange and Position: arrange your peonies however you love them best, making sure all stems are submerged. Place your vase in a cool, ventilated spot away from direct sunlight.
Refresh Regularly: change the water every two to three days and give the stems a fresh trim each time.
Voilà! With a little care, your beautiful peonies should delight you for up to two weeks — a short but glorious season to savour.
