Saignon Provence: a Breath of Fresh Air

Perched on a hilltop in the Luberon Valley of Provence lies Saignon, a tiny crumbly village with an amazing artistic community and an ambience of beautiful tranquility.

I’d first heard about Saignon through a creative heart in Provence, Ruth Ribeaucourt. Driving past a sign pointing to it on my last trip to France, I quickly reversed and ambled carefully up the thin, winding road. Upon walking into the tiny village perched on the hilltop (complete with the ruins of a 12th-century castle and ancient washhouses), I gazed upon a classic ornate fountain in the square, shaded by a beautiful old tree. Next to it was an auberge, accommodation that looked so cosy and quaint it won my heart immediately.

The Auberge au Presbytere is simple, tasteful accommodation, renovated and reopened in May 2026, housed in an old stone presbytery where the parish priest once lived. It looks upon the 16th-century fountain and is central to everything the village has to offer.

There are charming lanes to wander and breathtaking views from many vantage points. Perhaps what makes this village so darling, aside from its tranquility, are the local artisans. From the market providores who still weigh fruit on old scales to the artists and artisans, there is a sense of another time.

There is a fabulous milliner, Alain of Margotulle, with a waxed moustache and dancing blue eyes. As you wander past, you can hear the soft purr of his sewing machine as he creates beautiful Provencal sunhats. There is Carolina, a stylish jewellery maker, whose atelier is as much fun to discover as the bijoux themselves as you wander down a bejewelled and decorated pathway to find her.

And there is artist Pierre Jaccuard, who paints a landscape every day of the year using watercolours and pastels, and whose studio is filled with works of every size. Pierre was not there when I began chatting to his wife, Camille. However, he soon arrived in his old Citroen 2CV, its bonnet covered in paint splatters because he uses it as his working surface en plein air.
