Make Crushed Gold Leaf Easter Eggs, a simple and beautiful Easter activity to enjoy on your own or with your children.
There’s something truly special about slowing down and creating during Easter. Whether it’s the quiet joy of a solo moment or the laughter shared with little hands helping, this crushed gold leaf Easter egg activity is both simple and magical.
I was recently inspired by a beautiful Instagram post featuring delicate gold-flecked eggs. It looked effortless—and it is—but like all creative projects, the results may not turn out exactly as imagined… and that’s part of the charm.
Many of the viral tutorials use very white-shelled eggs to achieve those soft, pastel hues. I found these quite difficult to source, so my colours turned out more muted than expected. Still, the end result had its own rustic, natural beauty—proof that imperfection can be just as lovely.
Ingredients
6 eggs (preferably very white-shelled, if you can find them)
Enough water to cover the eggs
A pinch of salt
1 tablespoon turmeric
4 purple cabbage leaves
1 egg white
Gold leaf (available from craft stores such as Eckersley’s, or edible gold leaf from supermarkets)
Note: This activity involves hot water and a stovetop. Children should always be supervised.
Method
Place the eggs in a saucepan and add enough water to fully cover them. Add a pinch of salt.
Set the saucepan over heat and gently bring to the boil.
Add the turmeric and purple cabbage leaves to the water to create your natural dyes.
Boil for 10 minutes, then turn off the heat and allow the eggs to cool completely in the coloured water.
Once cooled, remove the eggs and gently dry them with a paper towel.
Pour a little egg white into the palm of your hand. Place a sheet of gold leaf over your palm and gently crush it.
Take an egg and roll it between your fingers and palm, allowing delicate flecks of gold to adhere to the shell.
Set the finished eggs on a paper towel to dry.

A Few Notes
These eggs are perfectly safe to eat once peeled. If you’ve used non-edible gold leaf, simply ensure no particles remain on the egg before eating.
And just like that… a little everyday magic.
